Opposition to EU carbon tax grows
A group of 26 countries last week came together in New Delhi, India, for a two-day meeting to protest against the EU’s decision to charge airlines for their emissions. The meeting was hosted by India on 29-30 September. It brought together members of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and other non-EU states, including the US, China, Canada, Russia, and South Africa. At the end of the meeting, delegates adopted a joint declaration, stating that the EU plan to include aviation in its Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is “discriminatory” and a violation of international law. According to an International Centre for Trade an Sustainable Development report, signatories have invited other states to align themselves with the statement.
