Dubai International Airport was unaffected by the volcanic ash cloud as it reported a 13.9% rise in passenger numbers. During 15 to 21 April, the number of passengers grew from 3,289,037 to 3,745,016. Dubai airports saw an increase of 18.7% in passenger traffic while cargo grew by 24.6% compared to April 2009. Following the volcanic ash cloud disruption, Dubai International effectively cleared the backlog of travellers by sending out 46 additional flights to transport stranded passengers and cargo to their final destinations. CEO of Dubai Airports, Paul Griffiths, said the airport’s performance was ‘impressive’ and the reaction of Dubai International to ensure effective communication and airline re-routing helped to minimise the impact of the disruptions. “It’s testament to the great job airlines did to clear the backlog after the skies opened up. And it’s a clear indication that our confidence in the continued growth at Dubai International is well placed.” According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 100,000 flights worldwide were cancelled during the disruption, which prevented ten million passengers from flying.
