Hostelworld.com has revealed South America and South East Asia as its biggest growth markets this year as high numbers show holidaymakers are still budget-conscious. Uyuni in Bolivia has seen a 316% rise in bookings, followed by a 266% increase for Columbia and Brazil is 122% up in bookings. Uruguay has also performed well, with a 94% increase. Thailand, Taiwan and Cambodia have continued the Asian trend from recent years. “We’re delighted by the rise in the number of travelers heading to South America. It is fast becoming a very popular destination for our customer and there are a number of reasons that can be attributed to this,” said Hostelworld.com representative Aisling White. “First and foremost is safety, countries such as Columbia has traditionally been seen as dangerous but this unfair image is slowly changing. Furthermore, South America has become more accessible.” This follows a new agreement with Aerolineas Argentinas and a number of hostels. Bookings are also up for Jordan (65%), Toulouse (126%), Pamplona (80%) and York (109%). “Overall these figures continue to show the maturing of the budget travel industry with more people appreciating the options that hostelling gives them and are being seen as a real alternative to hotels,” added White. “They also prove again that backpackers are the trailblazers in discovering new destinations.”
