Business travel boosts Heathrow traffic

Heathrow airport recorded its busiest August figures this year following greater exposure to the business market, BAA revealed today. The airport recorded its second busiest month on record with a 2.5% increase in passengers to 6.5 million. European scheduled traffic grew 10.4% at the airport on the back of an 8.3% increase in seat capacity compared to August 2009. Meanwhile across its other UK airports, the operator saw a slight (0.6%) reduction in passengers, totalling to 10.6 million. At Stansted, a drop in seat capacity contributed to a 6.1% decline in passengers carried. Glasgow also suffered a 9.4% slump in passengers as seat capacity dropped 8.4%. Edinburgh’s traffic reduced 0.2% overall although European traffic grew 9.4%. Aberdeen and Southampton recorded decreased of 4% and 1% respectively.
