Cruise ships that use a ‘heavy’ amount of oil fuel are no longer able to sail in the Antarctic under a new law. From 1 August, ships that offer cruise-only trips, carry heavy fuel and more than 500 passengers will not be able to go in the waters, in a bid to protect wildlife in the area. It will mean that demand will be shifted to smaller vessels, which Gap Adventures has already seen for its ship, the m/s Expedition. “We are seeing a surge in the Expedition’s forward booking numbers for the Antarctic Season,” said John Warner, vice president of global sales at Gap Adventures. “There is no doubt that the limited number of permitted ships, coupled with continued demand from travellers seeking the ultimate adventure cruise, will drive travellers to our ship”.
