London Eye builders secure new Brighton attraction
By Amanda Greenwood, 16 July 2012, Monday 2:16 PM
Brighton & Hove City Council has backed proposals for a new attraction to be built by the architect firm behind the London Eye.
The new attraction, built by Mark Barfield Associates, will see a 175-metre high spike built on the seafront to house a 200-passenger viewing pod.
Named Brighton i360, the tower will allow visitors to see a 360-degree view of the seaside resort and will turn into a bar in the evening. Construction on the attraction will start this autumn with plans to open in March 2015. It will cost £14.8 million to build, with owners confident the tower will see 800,000 visitors a year.
“The unanimous decision to provide a commercial loan to the i360 means we can create a new way of looking at the city while providing a real lift for the
local economy,” said David Marks from Mark Barfield Associates on the announcement.
