Flying to the most popular and exotic island destination will get easier than before. Maldivian Airlines has announced the launch of direct flights between Male and Mumbai from 15 November. With initial three times a week operations, the airline is looking at increasing the frequency to five days a week.
Announcing the launch, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, Maldives Minister of Tourism said, “The starting of direct flights between Male and Mumbai will augment the connectivity between the two countries. Depending on the tourist traffic we also plan to start direct Maldivian Airlines flights between Delhi and Male by March 2013. Currently, Male is connected with direct flights from Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru.
“Lack of direct connectivity from Mumbai to Male has been a deterrent factor in choosing Maldives as a destination. With the introduction of direct flights, travel time will come down to about 2 hours 30 minutes.”
The island destination received 11,500 Indian tourists in 2011 and is expecting approximately 30,000 tourists by 2013.
