The president of Civitavecchia port, Pasqualino Monti has announced a EUR500 million investment plan which will see the port undergo a major expansion over the next three years.
Civitavecchia, which is one of Italy’s busiest ports, acts as the main cruise access point to Rome and saw around 2.45 million passengers come through its doors over the last year despite the Costa Concordia tragedy. The port is expected to hit three million passengers by 2016.
The development will see extra cruise and ferry berths added, a EUR35 million extension of the cruise terminal and money put towards improving the mobile bridge.
There are also plans to build a yacht marina and ‘energy pier’; while port executives are also looking at ways to better connect Civitavecchia to the nearby Fiumicino which will be used for small ship cruises visiting Rome.
Civitavecchia has been in need of investment for a number of year, halted by governments and economic conditions.
