Heathrow confirms Terminal 2 airlines

Work continues on Heathrow’s Terminal 2

Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2 is to become the home of Star Alliance, Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic’s domestic routes when it opens in 2014.

The new terminal is part of a GBP11 billion upgrade to the airport and will see 20 million passengers use T2 each year.

Moving the airlines will mean Terminal 1 will be closed early with all passengers travelling through the airport to travel through new or upgraded terminals from 2016. The airport is said to have had 18 options in the move and will still need to find a location for El Al, Icelandair, Cyprus Airways, Germanwings and Transaero when Terminal 1 closes.

“Terminal 2 will offer a significant improvement for passengers travelling through Heathrow. Providing all airlines and their passengers with great facilities is a key part of our vision for Heathrow,” said the airport’s development director John Holland-Kaye.

Star Alliance said it was pleased with the decision, which would see its 23 members under one terminal. Its members include Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Turkish Airlines, United and US Airways.
