Bahrain Air ceases operations
By Charmaine Fernz, 13 February 2013, Wednesday 5:40 AM
Bahrain Air has ceased operations and announced an immediate shut down effective today following an urgent extraordinary general meeting by the board members and shareholders.
“Closure of Bahrain Air means that all operations, including administrative operations, have ceased completely,” it says in a message on its website.
In a further statement, “heavy financial losses coupled with an unstable political and security situation have led the airline to announce immediate suspension of operations and to file for voluntary liquidation in accordance with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Commercial Companies Law.”
Around 300 Bahrain Air staff facing the axe after the airline announced plans to go into voluntary liquidation were last night told they would be fairly compensated, as reported by Gulf Daily News.
The carrier announced the immediate suspension of all its operations following a row with aviation authorities, which it accused of imposing restrictions on its operations as a result of outstanding debts to the government. No officials from Bahrain air were available for comment at the time of going to print.
