Mumbai airport continues to have the worst record in flight delays among Indian metros.
According to the data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India, SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo stuck to their schedules more in Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad than in Mumbai last year. Jet Airways suffered more delays in Delhi.
The low-cost carrier IndiGo, adhered to schedule on more than 91% occasions in all metros, while its on-time performance (OTP) was 84.6% in Mumbai. SpiceJet was best at Chennai airport with an OTP of 94%, while its OTP at Delhi was 80% and Mumbai at 73%.
Air India was on time on more than 67% of occasions at all major airports barring Mumbai, where it achieved an OTP of 67.5%. Only Jet Airways including the airline’s low-cost wings JetLite and Jet Konnect had the worst OTP at a city other than the financial capital. In 2012, Jet suffered more delays in Delhi, with an OTP of 78%, than in Mumbai, where its tally was 80.5%.
“Most flight delays happen in the morning or late evening. During these slots, flights invariably run behind schedule at Mumbai airport. Departure queues are longer in the morning. And in the evening, flights hover in the skies, waiting to land,” a senior airport official told the Times of India. On average delays are of 30-40 minutes in evening but can extend up to an hour.
