People of Kashmir are a step closer to improved transport connectivity to the rest of the country after the state government facilitated land acquisition for the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only road link between Kashmir Valley and the rest of India. The development means that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) can now act on plans to widen the road and construct bridges and tunnels after six years of delays.
The 294-km highway is a nightmare for travellers as it is prone to landslides and frequent blockades during winter and rainy seasons. Though it’s double-laned, it becomes single-laned at many points, obstructing the free flow of traffic, which in turn disrupts supplies to the valley, where almost everything, from foodgrains, poultry to cars and trucks, are supplied from other states.
