The Department of Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir has commenced plans to construct a string of hotels and resorts along the Srinagar to Gulmarg highway in an attempt to lure tourists to the region. Speaking to ANI, the Director of Kashmir Tourism Department, Farooq Shah, said; “Our efforts are to provide world-class facilities to tourists at all the tourist spots, be it Harbal, Darpathri, Yusmarg, Gurez or Bangas, the roadside facilities should be of international standards and it should make a good impression on a tourist.” The move has been welcomed by local businessmen and residents who have traditionally had to travel long distances to reach tourism markets. They are hopeful however that by distributing accommodation over the 55km stretch of road will help broaden market access for local traders. This project has already received grants from the Central Tourism Ministry and the state department has a budget of INR1,200 crore for the next two years.
