Irish low cost carrier Ryanair has cancelled its flights to Faro after a disagreement over airport expansion with the Portuguese tourism authority.
The carrier had accused the authority of rejecting a growth plan for Faro airport, however the body has vehemently denied the claim, according to a story by The Portugal News.
Ryanair had said that the entire region would lose out on winter growth because the authority had rejected an expansion plan. Capacity at Faro would have risen by 35%, delivering 70,000 additional passengers, the carrier said.
Turismo de Portugal told Portugal News it was initially unaware there even was a problem, however in response it issued a seven-point statement rejecting Ryanair’s accusation.
However the Portuguese body did admit that it had refused to pay the amount Ryanair had initially put forward to reinforce its operations in the Algarve.
The authority also said that Ryanair had benefitted from state subsidies in the past.
A Ryanair statement said: “Ryanair is the No.1 airline in Faro and Europe’s largest carrier, yet Faro has now lost the opportunity for new traffic, growth and jobs after Turismo De Portugal reneged on its recent commitment to solve the challenges of seasonality in Faro and rejected Ryanair’s proposal.”
