A travel search site has found that Tuesday is the cheapest day of the week to fly.
Using its new ‘Flight Insight’ tool, UK-based Momondo analysed flights on 40 key routes, comparing them across different days of the week. And the result was that Tuesday was found to be the cheapest day to travel. As one might expect, flights departing on Monday to Thursday were generally cheaper than those leaving on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with weekend flights costing up to 46% more than midweek.
Momondo noted that this was a “uniform trend” across all routes, both domestic and international, and covering a range of distances and flight times. For 58% of routes analysed, Tuesday was the cheapest day of departure, followed by Wednesday (28%). For the remaining 14% of routes, it was cheapest to depart on a Monday or Thursday.
And taking into account the price fluctuations, Momondo found that travellers can save on average 18% by changing their day of departure.
“The majority of Brits like to leave for a holiday at the end of the working week, preferring not to wait until Monday to set off. However, we found that with some flexibility in your schedule, you can save a lot of money by departing in the beginning of the week instead,” said Momondo spokesperson, Julie Pedersen.
Along with day of departure, the cost of an airfare is strongly influenced by factors including the booking lead time, time of departure, season, the number of airlines serving the route, and departure and arrival airports.
The analysis was done on 40 flight routes departing the UK on a standard week.
