Sir Howard Davies, head of the government-backed Airports Commission, has promised to produce a shortlist of “credible” options, from the 50 proposals he’s received, before the end of 2013.
The Airports Commission has been set up to address growing concerns over the UK’s airport crisis – with Heathrow, the UK’s major hub, currently operating at 98.5% capacity.
The commission won’t deliver its final decision until 2015, but Sir Howard doesn’t want to prolong the worry for people that would potentially be affected by proposed expansions.
Of the submissions, 25 would involve building new runways at existing airports including Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted – potentially needing compulsory purchase of homes.
Speaking to British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, Sir Howard said: I don’t think we can wisely let 25 different proposals sit on the table which are bound to worry people who are of course near by.
“I think it’s incumbent on us to narrow that down to a handful in December in our interim report and then we’ll do the detailed environmental and cost benefit work that you need to do to decide which of them is really the best runner.”
