A glut of major UK tour operators are reporting an increase in business because of renewed interest in Greece, the Mail on Sunday has reported.
Mark Warner, Sunvil Holidays and TUI have all seen a rise in bookings to the islands, which underwent a decrease at the beginning of the financial crisis.
Sunvil Holidays has seen a 20% increase in its Greece business against last year’s figures, Dudley der Parthog told the British paper.
“Greece has gone back to pre-2008 levels, which is really quite remarkable. There was a toxic cocktail which meant people were put off coming last year. But that’s led to pent-up demand which, when you factor in the problems in North Africa, means that everything is turning out much better for Greece this year.”
The story has been the same for Mark Warner, which has four of its eight resorts in the country, resulting in an 11% increase in turnover.
“People aren’t being put off by the financial situation and in fact demand for Greece is bigger than ever,” he said.
TUI boss Peter Long reiterated the sentiments of other tour operators in the region, outlining the company’s plans for building on a solid year.
“Markets like Greece recovered really quickly and business is now strong,” he explained. “These countries will always be popular and now are seen as offering great value too.”
