Greece is hoping to extend its tourist season past the summer beach holiday as it starts to recover from its recession.
The number of British tourists heading to Greece in the first eight months of the year is up 11% compared to last year, but the country is now focusing on areas such as history, nature, adventure, food and drink to appeal to even more.
The island of Santorini has already been using the food and drink theme after declaring 2013 the Year of Gastronomy in Santorini. Activities will continue into 2014 and include special menus, wine tastings, feasts and art exhibitions.
While more Brits are now heading to Mykonos, the latest statistics from the CAA showed most head to Athens, Corfu and Herakleion, Crete.
“Many British people and families know Greece for its sun, beaches and clear water, and of course Greece and the Greek islands are fantastic for relaxing summer holidays, but the country is full of untapped travel experiences just waiting to be discovered,” said Olga Kefalogianni, Greece’s Minister of Tourism.
