Half of travel management companies (TMCs) support the planned HS2 project and hope it will connect with mainland Europe in the future.
According to a new survey by the Guild of Travel Management Companies (GTMC), made of 1,000 respondents, 56% supported HS2 while 25% opposed, with 74% saying it was important or very important that it links to Heathrow.
Backing was higher amongst younger staff, who were 70% in favour of HS2.
The survey also found 72% of TMCs think some franchises should be publicly owned and will take its research to the government as contracts come to an end.
GTMC chief executive Paul Wait said: “74% of the survey respondents said that train operating companies should be able to compete against each other on the same lines and the GTMC will be using this and other supporting data to lobby government for ‘Open Access’ to be more widely adopted across the network, as franchises expire during the next Parliament. Essentially we will be arguing to bring true competition to the network in order to get a better deal for business travellers on price, capacity and innovation.”
