Austria and Italy are showing value for money in the ski holiday market this year, closing the gap on cheap prices in Eastern Europe.
According to a recent Post Office report, Bulgaria’s Bansko resort is the cheapest when pricing up items such as equipment hire, lift passes, ski lessons and living costs, with Kranjska Gora in Slovenia taking second place.
Bansko’s total came in at GBP273.81 then jumped to GBP325.54 in Slovenia.
However the Livingo resort in Italy appeared in third position at GBP350.73 followed by Ellmau, Austria; Morzine, France; Sestriere, Italy; Ruka, Finland;Soldeu, Andorra; Cervinia, Italy and Mayrhofen, Austria.
The report is the seventh to be put together and compiles prices from 30 resorts including 22 in Europe and eight in North America. The first North America resort in the barometer was the USA’s Winter Park in Colorado at GBP527.75, ranking at 18th.
“Resort prices are looking a bit higher this year and this can have a big impact on families when individual prices are multiplied for three, four or more people. Families who have not yet booked will be well advised to compare resort prices for ski equipment hire and lift passes, as well as for meals and drinks as these can make a big difference to the overall cost of a ski holiday. With sterling still weak against ski currencies, plan carefully to maximise spending money,” said Andrew Brown from the Post Office Travel Money.
According to the report’s sponsor Crystal Ski, France continues to dominate the share of UK skiers heading to its slopes with 34.8% of the market. This is relatively unchanged since last year, with the figures for Austria (28.2%) and Italy (15.2%) also seeing little difference.
