A new community of Komodo dragons has been discovered in Indonesia’s Komodo National Park.
The Jakarta Post reported that the lizards were found near Golo Mori and Tanjung Kerita Mese villages in the Mbeliling forest area of Flores Island.
The find was disclosed by Irfan Saputra, Burung, who told the newspaper that the discovery was significant because it proved the presence of Komodo dragons in areas other than on the Komodo and Rinca islands, where the animals are commonly found.
“The research team recorded pictures of komodo dragons using camera traps in Golo Mori,” Irfan was quoted saying by the Jakarta Post. “We hope our media friends can publicise this information as part of an effort to push for the conservation of this ancient animal in the Mbeliling area, on Flores Island,” he added.
The discovery was made during a study conducted by conservation groups. It is estimated that there are at least five Komodo dragons in Golo Mori coastal forest and another seven in Tanjung Kerta Mese.
