The former headquarters of the Titanic’s owner White Star Line will be transformed into a luxury hotel, it has been announced.
White Star Line’s former home in Liverpool will become an 11-storey, 35-suite hotel known as 30 James Street- Home of the Titanic.
New owners Signature Living plan to spend GBP7 million on renovating the building; which was originally built by Norman Shaw in the late 1890s but has not been used for more than 10 years.
The hotel will have a strong influence of its history with its journey on display throughout public areas and rooms, with each of its rooms being restored to show off the era.
QR codes will also be dotted around the hotel to offer interactive content helped along by historian Paul Louden-Brown, who worked on the Titanic movie and is now working with Signature Luxury.
Its public spaces will include the Carpathia bar and restaurant, named after the ship that saved lives from the Titanic. This will include two 100-foot balconies wrapped around the roof of the building to provide views of the city.
A spa and 180-seat banqueting suite will also be part of the development.
“Our view is to create a hotel which has never been created before, a hotel with a history like no other. We want to offer our guests the same luxury standards of service found across all our other hotels, but this time against the setting of a truly fascinating piece of Liverpool and maritime history,” said Signature Luxury’s founder Lawrence Kenwright.
“It is important to us that the restoration is handled carefully and that the final hotel gives an accurate representation of the history, which is why we have sought the help of Paul who has been a fantastic addition to the project team,” he added.
The first phase of the hotel is due to open in April 2014 including two hotel floors and Carpathia, followed by the remaining floors and spa in September 2014.
