Indonesia is planning to develop its own passenger aircraft.
The country’s Antara news agency reported the Indonesian National Aeronautics & Aviation Agency (LAPAN) as saying that it intends to develop the N219 aircraft in an effort to boost connectivity to more remote parts of the archipelago.
“The N219 aircraft will come into play as there are several areas in the country that are not yet accessible,” Indonesia’s research & technology minister, Gusti Muhammad Hatta, was quote saying on Friday.
The IDR90 billion (US$7.5 million) programme will commence in 2014, with construction and trials expected to follow a year later. The aircraft is expected to obtain certification in 2016.
The 19-seat N219 will be designed to operate on short landing strips.
