Dubai International Airport is on course to overtake London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport by 2015, and to hit the 100m passenger mark by 2020.
Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports, said; “2013 was a year of mapping out and preparing what appears to be a bright and busy future for Dubai Airports. Our traffic projections show that we will have more than 100m passengers passing through our airports by 2020.”
Passenger numbers in Dubai grew by 15.3% yoy to 66.5m in 2013, and this momentum continued through the early months of 2014, up 12.3% in January and February.
With rising passenger numbers, aircraft movements also grew in 2013, up 7.5% yoy to 369,953.
In order to cater for this rapid growth, Dubai Airports will invest USD7.8 billion in the expansion of facilities, while Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai World Central will also cater for rising volumes in air traffic.
The airport operator has said expansion plans, dubbed SP2020, will create additional capacity which includes new terminal space, improvement to the airport’s runways as well as expansion to the airport’s cargo facilities.
Development is already under way, led by construction company Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).
