Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will introduce a several new in-flight initiatives next month to help passengers suffering from allergies.
The carrier has teamed up with the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) to offer a range of food and linen options that can be tailored to passengers’ health requirements.
First and business Class passengers will be offered pillows stuffed with synthetic materials, as an alternative to traditional down-filled versions, and SWISS will also stop using decorative flowers and air fresheners in its cabins. Onboard toilets will feature soaps that are sensitive on the skin.
In terms of in-flight F&B services, SWISS will offer lactose- and gluten-free alternatives, including lactose-free cream and chocolate. Depending on the length of the flight, passengers with allergies or other intolerances can also request special snacks, such as yoghurts and cakes.
Allergy sufferers will be able to order special meals in all cabin classes on long-haul flights.
“We have seen a steady increase over the past few years in our customers’ need for an air travel environment that pays due regard to any allergic conditions,” explained Frank Maier, SWISS’ head of product & services. “We’ve been working with ECARF to provide a concrete response to these demands to make everyone’s air travel experience as pleasant and problem-free as possible.”
In taking these measures, SWISS becomes the first airline in the world to meet the ECARF criteria for ‘allergy-friendly’ airlines, and will carry the foundation’s seal of approval on its products.
