The Queen will officially open Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2, known as the Queen’s Terminal, in June.
The Queen is expected to be joined by the Duke of Edinburgh at the opening on 23 June, nearly 60 years after Her Majesty opened the old Terminal 2 in 1955.
The new terminal has taken five years to build and will house 23 Star Alliance airlines when it opens in June.
Heathrow’s development director, John Holland-Kaye said: “We are proud that Her Majesty The Queen has agreed to officially open Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, the latest stage in Heathrow’s GBP11billion transformation. The new Terminal 2 stands on the site of the previous Queen’s Building, and the official opening on 23 June recognises the long association with Her Majesty The Queen.”
The airport also unveiled the first images of its giant Slipstream sculpture that dominates the entrance to the terminal. Standing at 78 metres high, the Richard Wilson RA-designed sculpture will be seen by the 20 million passengers a year expected to use the terminal.
Wilson said: “Slipstream is a metaphor for travel, it is a time-based work that responds to its location and I feel honoured that Slipstream will go on to be seen by millions of visitors travelling to and from the UK each year.”
