Indonesia is planning to turn the city of Ternate into a “tourism city”.
According to the Antara news agency, the historic city in the eastern province of North Maluku will now be developed using funds provided by the central government. This will include the restoration of Fort Oranje, which was built by the Dutch in 1607, as well as other historical sites.
“The central government’s commitment to turning Ternate into a tourism city [will include] the allocation of funds in significant amounts to revitalise Fort Oranje in the city centre,” Ternate’s mayor Burhan Abdurrahman was quoted saying.
“Ternate is also part of the Indonesian Heritage Cities Network (JKPI) and therefore various efforts to optimise the tourism potential in the city should be supported by all parties,” he added.
Ternate was an important hub for the spice trade in the 16th and 17th centuries.
