A new Instagram campaign has been launched to change the perception of careers in travel and tourism.
Organised by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the campaign calls on industry members to create their own 15 second video and explain why they love their job.
Chris Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton Worldwide is one of the Industry leaders kicking off the drive, which is intended to demonstrate the career opportunities available.
WTTC research has identified serious challenges when it comes to the understanding and profile of the sector amongst undergraduates, who have a negative perception of a career in the sector.
Despite the fact the industry employs a higher proportion of young people and women compared with the global workforce as a whole, only 47% of UK students said they would consider a career in the Industry.
David Scowsill, president & CEO of WTTC says many young people need to be persuaded to consider a career in Travel & Tourism.
“It’s a fantastic Industry to work in but we need to increase awareness of career opportunities. Graduates need to be moved away from always only considering banking or finance or law as careers with opportunities for progression and security and see Travel & Tourism as an excellent career option.”
The new campaign is intended to achieve this by making working professionals industry ambassadors, and emphasising the perks of the job.
“Travel & Tourism offers work-life balance, international opportunities, travel and good benefits. But we need people to realise this,” said Mr Scowsill.
To get the campaign moving, cash prizes are available to the best videos uploaded to Instagram, tagging @WTandTC and hashtagging #TourismMatters.
