Indian travellers tend to start saving for their holidays well in advance, a new study has revealed.
According to the results of Expedia’s 2014 Vacation Spending Index, which were released this week, 71% of global travellers start saving for their vacation in the year prior to their departure date. But among Indian travellers, this proportion rises to 85%.
In addition, 41% of Indian travellers maintain a dedicated vacation fund – among the highest in the world.
But his pragmatic behaviour does not mean that Indians are overly thrifty with their money while on holiday; Expedia found that 90% of Indian travellers regularly tip while on holiday, which is among the highest level of any country.
Globally, taxes (41%) and baggage fees (36%) were found to be the most annoying travel expenses for travellers, followed by booking fees (34%) and airline seat selection (27%). But travellers are most willing to spend on a hotel in a desirable location (39%), direct flights, as opposed to connecting (34%) and a room with a view (29%).
Additional spending was weighted towards new clothes (43%), a haircut (32%) and phone packages (16%).
