Pub crawl organisers in Magaluf will now need to obtain a licence following the local government’s shock over a video that recently went viral on social media.
The Mayor of the Calvià municipality Manuel Onieva, in which Magaluf is situated, passed a law this week that puts tighter controls on organised pub crawls; the first municipality resort to implement specific rules.
It now means guides will have a wear a jacket so local police can monitor them and companies will be fined if there is more than 50 people on each pub crawl.
The action comes after a video went viral on social media showing a female holidaymaker performing sexual acts on 24 men in a Magaluf bar while on an organised crawl.
“As Mayor of the Municipality of Calvià, I wish to express my total rejection and anger at the activities which were carried out in a video which is currently on the social media circuit. I must highlight that with immediate effect a police investigation has commenced and this issue is in the hands of the Town Hall legal services department. They have the responsibility to observe this situation from our legal perspective so we can explore options to prevent events like this occurring in our resort and leisure areas,” said Onieva in a statement.
“This week I have passed a law giving us tighter control over the operation of pub crawl organisers and we are the first municipality resort to implement a law such as this. The law will come into effect this month [July 2014]. Companies operating pub crawls in Calvià now have to apply for a licence through the town hall. They have to prove their responsibility and show that they have the appropriate civil insurances in place.”
The Calvià region of Majorca has successfully moved past its clubbing holiday image in recent years with recent activity with KBC PR & Marketing encouraging more to visit the region for its upmarket beach clubs, cycling opportunities, family attractions, food and hiking.
Onieva added: “Since 2012, the Town Hall’s internal tourism organisation, Visit Calvià has been working very successfully in the UK to change the perception of the region and to promote the vast array of high quality hotels and products that are available. Our efforts have generated huge success for Calvià. It is such a shame that an irresponsible act by one rogue operator is threatening to undo our hard work. Our commitment to promote our beautiful region to the UK remains as strong as ever.”
