The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has revealed details of a major event in Bangkok, which it says is designed to lift the spirits of citizens, in the wake of the recent unrest.
From 25-26 July, the streets of the Thai capital’s Ratchprasong area will host a series of parades, fashion shows, concerts and food stalls, as the country aims to restore local good-will and visitor confidence following this year’s protests and coup.
Ratchaprasong, which is at the centre of Bangkok’s shopping district, has been the focus of protests in recent months and years, so the decision to host the event in the area is symbolic.
Instead of the protest camps that previously blocked the streets, the TAT will reclaim the area for a major show of Thai culture, in an effort to “bring the smiles back to the faces of the Thai people”.
“This event will be unmatched in the annals of Thai tourism,” said TAT governor, Thawatchai Arunyik. “We are going to make this the biggest and best back-to-normal party Thailand has ever seen.”
Over the two days, the event will include a ‘Happiness Concert’ in CentralWorld Square, a ‘Happy Gift Market’ and an area called ‘Stars on the Street’ which will have booths manned by Thai celebrities.
“This is going to be the mother of all bounce-back parties. We invite people from all around the world to join us in what will be a once-in-a-lifetime event,” Thawatchai added.
