Eleven fans were hospitalised and 22 were arrested in Brazil during the World Cup, the Foreign Office has revealed.
Consular assistance numbers released today said many of the arrests were related to ticket touting, while the hospitalisations were mostly for minor injuries.
Throughout the tournament six English police officers were present as well as 13 consular staff, four of which were located in the cities the England team were playing in.
The office had to issue 75 emergency documents during the tournament at a tune of around GBP95 each but hailed its pre-travel communication a success in keeping the figure low. The ‘Be on the Ball’ campaign launched in December saw nearly 80,000 views on its World Cup Travel Advice page; 2,000 video views and reached more than 9 million people on social media.
A similar system will now be used in Brazil when it hosts the Olympics in 2016.
“The vast majority of England fans were GREAT ambassadors for the country and the number requiring assistance was low. The Be on the Ball campaign helped fans prepare and we will look to do something similar for the Olympics,” said Alex Ellis, Her Majesty’s Ambassador for Brazil.
