Military authorities in Thailand will temporarily waive visa fees for Chinese tourists in a bid to boost arrivals from the growing Asian market.
The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) agreed to waive visa fees for Chinese tourists from 1 August to 31 October, removing entry barriers for Chinese visitors.
Upheaval in Thailand’s political landscape, which spilled onto the streets for months through 2013 and 2014, has caused the number of inbound Chinese tourists to drop by around 25% year-on-year, with those travelling to the capital Bangkok slumping by almost 40%.
Thai authorities will also be inviting tourism officials from China to inspect the travel climate first hand, in a further effort to resuscitate international arrivals.
The visa fee exemption is among the five proposals approved by the NCPO to stimulate the economy. Other proposals aim at promoting the development of trade, investment, industry and infrastructure, and amending laws and regulations to remove obstacles to businesses.
