The cockpit voice recorder of flight MH17 is intact and has not been tampered with, investigators have confirmed.
The aircraft’s ‘black boxes’ – the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder – were taken to the UK earlier this week, to be analysed by an international team led by the Air Accident Investigation Branch of the United Kingdom (AAIB). And the Dutch Safety Board has now confirmed that a “thorough examination” of the cockpit voice recorder has already been undertaken.
“The cockpit voice recorder was damaged but the memory module was intact,” the board said in a statement released on Thursday.
“Furthermore no evidence or indications of manipulation of the cockpit voice recorder was found. Following the examination, the cockpit voice recorder data was successfully downloaded and contained valid data from the flight. The downloaded data has to be further analysed and investigated.”
The examination of the flight data recorder will start on Friday. “This will show whether this recorder also contains relevant information, in which case the data from both recorders will be combined,” the board added.
