Brazil saw more than one million foreign tourists head over for the World Cup, surpassing expectations by 600,000.
Figures from the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism show the country received 1.035 million tourists from 203 countries over the period from 23 May to 13 July.
More passengers passed through its airports on a daily basis compared to Carnival and Christmas, with 485,000 passengers going through 21 airports each day.
New daily bookings registered 108,000 during match days and preceding day.
“The main legacy was how we learned to combine an organised environment with an atmosphere of celebration,” said Luis Fernandes, executive secretary for Brazil’s Minister for Sport Aldo Rebelo.
