Vietnam’s tourism sector continued to struggle in July.
Following a dip in arrival numbers in June, following violent anti-Chinese protests in the country, Vietnam saw another monthly drop in international visitors last month.
According to the preliminary monthly data from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), Vietnam welcomed 564,736 overseas arrivals in July 2014, 14.2% fewer than the same month last year.
This decline was triggered by a 28.8% slump in arrivals from mainland China and a 15.7% drop from Taiwan. Both countries were affected by the recent protests, which stem from China and Vietnam’s territorial dispute over the Paracel Islands.
Despite this, China remained Vietnam’s largest visitor source market in July, with 123,442 arrivals accounting for 21.9% of total monthly visits to Vietnam.
South Korea (+6.0% to 56,450) was the second largest contributor of visitors to Vietnam last month, followed by Japan (+0.4% to 44,681), USA (+5.9% to 38,881), Taiwan (-15.7% to 38,428) and Australia (-0.9% to 30,997).
Russia remains Vietnam’s largest European source market, with 22,713 monthly visits, up 36.5% year-on-year.
For the first seven months of the year, Vietnam has now welcomed a total of 4.85 million international visitors, 15.6% more than the same period in 2013.
