Myanmar has officially launched a new online electronic visa system for all international tourists, in a bid to boost tourist arrivals in the country.
The new e-visa scheme was formally introduced on Monday 1 September 2014, following a trial in August. The system is intended to ensure that all tourists receive an e-visa within five days of their online application.
International arrivals to Myanmar continue to rise sharply. According to the latest official data from the country’s tourism authorities, Myanmar welcomed 1.6 million overseas visitors in the first seven months of 2014, up 43% compared to the same period last year.
The country is now expecting to welcome three million international arrivals in 2015, rising to seven million by 2020.
