AirFrance will cut half of its scheduled flights this week as the company faces strike action from several pilot unions.
“On the basis of what we have now, I think we shall only be able to operate roughly 50% of flights,” said AirFance CEO, Francois Gagey, who advised passengers to change their tickets during this period of disruption.
Unions have called for an eight-day strike from Monday 15 September to Monday 22 September, as they protest cost cutting plans as the carrier looks to redevelop its product offering and regain market share from the low cost sector with the launch of its Transavia airline.
The airline is in constant dialogue with all the unions and will continue to hold talks in the next few days, however early negotiations have failed to avoid industrial action, which is expected to cost the airline upwards of EUR10 million per day.
Air France KLM announced plans to change the Transavia brand as it looks to develop its leisure proposition in Europe as part of the group’s growth plan Perform 2020.
Transavia France and Transavia the Netherlands will both have new bases announced in other European countries under the plans, as the group aims to position itself as a major player in the competitive European market.
