Goa has achieved an all-time record number of tourists during its usually quiet monsoon months.
According to the latest data from the state’s Department of Tourism, India’s resort state achieved an 18% year-on-year jump in visitor arrivals during the months of June, July and August 2014.
The tourism board attributed the rise in tourist arrivals to several factors, including “the introduction of safety and security measures… and rigorous PR and marketing initiatives”.
The state also conducted a series of domestic and international road shows, exhibitions and international travel agents fam trips.
“Rebranding and re-positioning of brand Goa as a land of all seasons and capitalising on the fact that Goa is the world’s only tourist destination that has the maximum contrasts in the smallest geographical space further notched up the numbers of tourists in the state during the monsoons,” explained Ameya Abhyankar IAS, director of Goa’s Department of Tourism.
New activities launched to boost monsoon tourism include white water rafting, which can only be experienced in the rainy months, and photography trips. Seasonal events such as the Catholic Sao Joao festivals and the Bonderam flag festival are also being promoted.
