A company that manufactures aircraft seats is aiming to ease the pain of the dreaded middle seat.
Acro, which makes seats for the popular Airbus A320 aircraft, has designed a new row of three seats that features an extra wide middle seat. The Ultra XC seat concept offers a middle seat measuring 19.3 inches (49cm) wide, flanked by 18.1-inch-wide aisle and window seats.
And Acro says the new concept will allow airlines to sell their unpopular middle seats.
“The Ultra XC makes the middle seat an airline marketing dream,” said Cameron Allan, Acro’s commercial director. “The Ultra XC is already in service with Condor Airlines of Germany and is now available to all airlines looking to retrofit their Airbus cabins with this wider, lighter, reclining passenger seat.”
Recent research conducted by the London Sleep Centre revealed that a minimum seat width of 18 inches improves passenger sleep quality by 53% compared with a standard 17-inch-wide seat.
“While the A320 isn’t a long-haul aircraft, passenger comfort and the ability to rest within personal space on board remain key strong indicators of passenger satisfaction even on short- to medium-haul flights,” said Allan. “There is a real opportunity here for an airline to promote their middle seat as a positive customer benefit once the Acro Ultra XC is installed.”
