India experienced surging demand for domestic air travel in September 2014.
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the country’s domestic airlines saw a 26.3% jump in passenger traffic during the month.
This far exceeded a 7.5% expansion of available seat capacity, which caused a spike in average cabin load factors. Indian airlines managed to fill an average of 81.5% of their domestic seats in September – among the highest level of any major domestic market in the world.
IATA called India’s growth one of the “big stories in September”.
“Whereas previous improvements in growth rates potentially were attributable to revived confidence over the new business-supportive government, the strong increase in September was owing to market stimulation measures introduced by carriers,” it said in a statement.
In month-on-month comparisons, India’s traffic climbed 10.3%.
And India’s growth far exceeded the overall growth rates for the Asia Pacific region in September. In terms of domestic traffic, the region’s demand climbed 6.4%, while average load factors declined slightly to 77.1%.
