Fred. Olsen’s Boudicca ship was struck by an engine room fire earlier today, causing a power failure.
The ship was sailing off the coast of Casablanca, Morroco when the fire struck and was left without engine power for around five hours.
Fred. Olsen said the ship is now on its way to Lanzarote at a slower speed than usual and passengers are using the usual activities on the ship.
There have been no injuries among the 784 guests and 356 crew members onboard and a statement from the cruise line said ‘there is reported to be a good atmosphere onboard’.
A statement said: “We are reviewing the itinerary and assessing the extent of the damage to the two main engines and electrical cables, and will make any repairs necessary at the next port of call. A revised itinerary will be advised in due course. The safety and well-being of all guests and crew on board Boudicca is Fred. Olsen Cruise Line’s utmost priority, and we continue to liaise with the relevant maritime authorities.”
Boudicca is currently sailing an 18-night ‘Cape Verde & the Canaries’ itinerary which departed Southampton on Tuesday (20 January). It had visited Cadiz and was scheduled to reach Lanzarote tomorrow morning.
