The United States was again runner-up in the Country Brand Index, with Britain moving up to third place from sixth last year.
Australia was also named the best country for outdoor activities and praised for having the most-friendly locals in the survey of 2,600 people.
“Australia is impressive as a strong country brand for the range of vacation experiences that can be enjoyed,” the study said.
Other countries making the top 10 included (in order), France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, Greece and Japan.
CBI also identified Croatia, China and the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) as the top three “rising stars” – those likely to become a major tourist destination in the next five years.
CBI, now in its third year, is a comprehensive study of more than 2,600 international travellers conducted by FutureBrand, a leading global brand consultancy. It examines how countries are branded and ranked according to key criteria.
