The largest hotel in Christchurch has now reopened following a major redevelopment.
The newly-named BreakFree on Cashel Christchurch has opened its doors following the first stage of a project aimed at rebuilding the 263-room hotel, which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
The first 179 rooms and dining outlets are now open, with the remaining rooms and other facilities expected to be completed by 1 September 2015.
“As Christchurch rebuilds and attracts more tourism, conferences and events to the region, the extra accommodation provided by BreakFree on Cashel is vital to the city’s tourism and business landscape,” said the hotel’s general manager, Graeme Back.
The former All Seasons hotel, which will now be managed by Australia’s Mantra Group, is located in the centre of the New Zealand city. Once fully completed, the hotel will offer 263 rooms, including a range of ‘pod-style’ units, plus a café and bar, a breakfast room, lounge, an 80-pax capacity conference room, two boardrooms, an internet kiosk and laundry.
The property was originally constructed in 1987 as an office building and later became the Hotel So and most recently, an All Seasons. But it was badly damaged by the 2011 quake.
The hotel’s opening marks Mantra Group’s 11th property in New Zealand and its second in the Christchurch area, following the Peppers Clearwater Resort.
