South Korea will help India increase the speed of the key railway line between Delhi and Mumbai.
The Economic Times reports that the Korean Rail Road Network (KRNA), a state-run rail construction company, has carried out a survey of an initial section of the line, running between Delhi and Palwal, with a view to devising methods of increasing the speed of the route.
The newspaper revealed that the Korean team met with officials in Delhi last week to discuss the challenges facing the project, in terms of track, signalling and overhead line infrastructure.
And once the study has been completed, the solutions could be introduced to other key railway lines.
“The railway minister in his budget speech had said the speed of nine railway corridors will be increased from the existing 110 and 130kmph to 160 and 200kmph respectively so that inter-metro journeys like Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai can be completed overnight. Many similar projects will also be initiated,” said Delhi’s divisional railway manager, Arun Arora.
“[The] Delhi-Mumbai route needs urgent upgradation. The route is saturated as the traffic has drastically increased. We, therefore, decided to approach economies that already have high-speed connectivity. This will help us enhance the line capacity and cut down the travel time of the passengers,” he added.
