Visitor arrivals to Australia experienced strong growth in the year ending May 2015, a new report has revealed.
The figures, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), showed that 7.07 million overseas visitors arrived in Australia during the 12-month period, up 6.3% year-on-year.
And the momentum appears to be increasing in 2015, with arrivals up 7.3% in the first five months of the 2015 calendar year. This could be partially due to the increase in arrivals for the Cricket World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia in February and March 2015.
“Stand outs would be the continued strong performance of the Americas and Asia, once again reinforcing the critical importance of adopting a balanced portfolio in our international marketing,” said Tourism Australia‘s managing director, John O’Sullivan.
New Zealand remains Australia’s top visitor source market, accounting for 1.22m arrivals in the 12 months to May 2015, up 3.0% year-on-year. But much of the growth is being driven by China, which surged 21.7% to 754,700 visitors.
The UK (681,400 visitors) is still Australia’s third largest source market, despite a 2.4% year-on-year decline, with the USA (+7.8% to 527,800) fourth and Singapore (+4.0% to 359,600) fifth.
Along with China, India (+20.7% to 181,700) was among Australia’s fastest growing source markets.
