A new study has revealed which nationalities are the most generous with their hotel reviews.
The latest Travel Smarts survey from online travel agency Agoda.com found that Russian travellers offered the highest average hotel review scores, while citizens of the UAE were the hardest to satisfy.
The study, conducted in July 2015, analysed more than seven million hotel reviews on Agoda.com to see which nationalities tended to rate hotels higher or lower than average.
And the results revealed that Russian travellers tend to give the highest scores, scoring hotels 0.56 review points higher than the global average (8.52 out of 10). Egyptian (0.47 higher than average), Irish (0.43), Polish (0.42) and Israeli (0.33) travellers were also high scorers.
Chinese travellers were the eighth most generous (0.27), with Americans 10th (0.18), British 12th (0.11) and Australians 15th (0.06).
At the other end of the scale, travellers from the UAE scored hotels 0.32 points lower than the global average, making them the world’s stingiest reviewers. Japanese (-0.30), Omani (-0.29), Indian (-0.28) and Qatari (-0.24) travellers were also among the lowest scorers.
“Travellers from different countries tend to have different review rating standards depending on their travel patterns, spending power, and just general likes and dislikes,” explained John Brown, chief operating officer of Agoda.com. “Our customers are from all over the world so our ratings will reflect the average.”
For a balanced hotel review, visitors should perhaps pay heed to the views of Canadian (0.02), South African (0.02), Bahraini (-0.02) and Taiwanese (-0.03) travellers, who had the closest scores to the global average.
