Chengdu Airlines will take delivery of the first ever COMAC ARJ21-700 aircraft in November 2015, marking the commercial debut of the new Chinese-made regional jet.
Two models of the ARJ21, which is manufactured by Shanghai-based COMAC, are being developed: the smaller -700 and the larger -900. The -700 version operated by Chengdu Airlines will come equipped with 78 seats in a two-cabin layout – eight in business class and 70 in economy.
Chengdu Airlines will welcome its first five aircraft this year, deploying them on routes from Chengdu to Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi’an, Kunming, Guiyang and Wuhan. It will then progressively take delivery of a further 25 ARJ21-700s.
So far, COMAC has taken orders for almost 300 ARJ21 aircraft, all of which are for the smaller -700 model. Other airlines to have ordered the new jet include domestic carriers Shanghai Airlines, Shandong Airlines and Henan Airlines, plus Lao Airlines and Myanmar National Airlines.
COMAC is also developing a larger aircraft, the C919, which is intended to complete with the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
