P&O Cruises has revealed that its latest Australia-based ship will be called Pacific Explorer.
The 77,000-tonne vessel, which is currently operating as Princess Cruises’ Dawn Princess, will join the P&O fleet in 2017. This will make it the company’s sixth Australian cruise ship, following the arrival of two new ships this year: Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden.
Pacific Explorer will be able to carry up to 2,000 passengers, with more than 400 of the ship’s cabins featuring balconies. Other onboard amenities will include resort-style pool areas, multiple F&B outlets and “new and exciting entertainment concepts”.
“Just as we’re preparing to welcome Pacific Aria and Pacific Eden next month, we’re thrilled to have another ship on the horizon that will continue the exciting evolution of our modern Australian cruise product. We have grand plans for Pacific Explorer and we think her new features are going to cause a lot of excitement in the local industry,” said P&O’s senior vice president, Sture Myrmell.
Built in 1997, Dawn Princess underwent a refurbishment in Brisbane in 2009 and currently operates cruises in Australian waters. It will now be rebranded and revamped before embarking on its first P&O sailing from Sydney in May 2017.
The launch of Pacific Explorer will double P&O’s Australian fleet from three to six ships between 2015 and 2017.
