The Olympic Games this August is set to give China’s aviation industry a big boost, said a report.
The Shanghai Daily, quoting information from the General Administration of Civil Aviation, said domestic carriers plan to fly 210 million passengers this year, a 14% jump from a year earlier. Five million overseas visitors and more than 120 million domestic travellers are expected to visit Beijing this year, according to the organisers of the Beijing Olympic Games.
Analysts quoted by the daily predicted that the event would generate revenue of RMB5 billion (US$689 million) to the domestic aviation industry. Already in the first three quarters of last year, domestic carriers and airports had earned RMB17 billion in profit, rising 74% from a year earlier.
The report, quoting the CAAC’s new head, Li Jiaxiang, said they would not not approve any application for a new airline before 2010 and would also be strict on the introduction of new aircraft.
“We should fully consider the airlines’ capability and safety to prevent the industry from overheating,” he was quoted saying.
The aviation industry will see a total fixed-asset investment of RMB36 billion this year, against last year’s RMB26 billion, according to the regulator.
